Home is somewhere you should be able to shut yourself off from the weather, but that’s unlikely to be the case if your property isn’t winter-ready and “winterproofed”.
Getting your home winter-ready is such an easy thing to do when you know how. From our long-standing experience, the foremost and most effective winterproofing tips you should employ, ahead of temperatures tumbling, are as follows:
Upgrade to energy efficient windows and doors
The fault will primarily lie with your windows and doors if you constantly feel the cold coming in. Traditional windows and doors lose their structural integrity as they age and are mostly single glazed, which provides an open invitation to draughts.
This draughtiness will disappear after the installation of energy efficient windows and doors due to the weather seals around the insulated double or triple glazed units. The glass placed inside of these windows and doors will also have a much higher energy rating and supply a better standard of heat retention.
Get a boiler service arranged
We rely on our boilers so much over the winter months. The nightmare scenario is if yours were to break down in the middle of a cold snap, leaving you without heating and hot water.
To minimise that threat, get a qualified gas engineer to give your boiler the once over to check for any faults and fix them, when necessary. When servicing the boiler, they will also be able to perform tests to monitor that it’s running efficiently so that you don’t pay more for your energy bills than you should do.
Have a solid roof fitted to your extension
Had you envisaged serving up turkey and all the trimmings in your extension on Christmas Day but the weather will deny you that opportunity?
We won’t be able to have it in place for this Christmas, but the application of one of our replacement roofing systems (Guardian Warm Roof or UltraRoof) to the extension will make that possible for next Christmas Day.
You won’t believe how much warmer the space feels once one of these lightweight systems (made from tiles or slates) has been integrated in place of your current roof.
