Thieves will really be on the prowl now that it’s gradually getting darker much earlier than over the past few months.
Ahead of the clocks going back and a further hour of daylight being lost, you need to think about your home security.
In fact, October is National Home Security Month, an initiative that aims to reiterate the importance of home security, and urges householders to get theirs in order.
You will find some great security advice on the NHSM website, and Balhousie can pass on some equally useful guidance too:
Install a burglar alarm
It’s a really obvious suggestion, but we mention it because currently, only a third of UK homes have a burglar alarm.
Frighteningly, a home break-in occurs every 106 seconds in this country, and there’s no doubt that the absence of a burglar alarm in a high proportion of homes is often why.
£3,000 is the average cost of a break-in – can you afford to lose that much cash?
You shouldn’t have to when the cost of a bells-only, dialler, wireless or silent alarm can be as little as £200.
Stop leaving a spare key out
It’s a very British habit that we see no risk in leaving a spare key outside for someone so that they can get into our house. That someone could easily be a burglar as they know all the usual hiding spots and will look for a key before they try any other method of gaining entry.
You will find it difficult making a successful claim on your home and contents insurance if your home is burgled for this reason.
It would be far safer if you just got a spare key cut for anyone who might need it and hand it to them.
Fit secure new windows and doors
If they have no luck locating a spare key, it will be your windows and doors that a thief turns to next and tries to get open.
They shouldn’t stand a chance, but that will only be the case if it’s impossible for the glass to be removed from the outside and both the frame and lock are resilient enough.
Put your windows and doors to the test. Lock them and then give them a firm push to see if you detect any weakness in them.
You could be much better off having new double or triple glazed windows and doors installed.
As it happens, windows and doors are included in our autumn sale, so you can get replacements for an amazing price. Just request a FREE quote from Balhousie.
